DEBBIE DEGENHARDT
Debbie has been a musician practically since birth. She began playing piano at age 4. Since then she has developed skills in Jazz, Classical and Contemporary vocal techniques, conducting, sound recording engineering, and is proficient in numerous instruments including keyboards, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and classical stringed instruments. She is often heard saying, "Give me the instrument and in 2 weeks and I’ll be able to play it…" She has toured with bands along the North-East, has conducted full orchestras with adult and children’s choirs, played in wedding bands and specialty bands. Debbie has, on occasion, even DJ’d. She has appeared with the Doug Debin Trio on the Cable TV show "Something to Talk About with Bonnie Graham." Debbie has assisted in recording projects for artists such as Sandi Blair and Michael Gordon.
Ms. Degenhardt's piano started with classical training with Cathleen Banovich and then Leda Kwiatech. In high school she had the great fortune to study music theory, band and choral studies under fine teachers such as Anthony Eastwood and James Lamendola. Debbie maintained her skills at college in a piano class at SUNY @ Fredonia while earning her Bachelors in Music Education. While there Debbie had private classical vocal training with Christine Walters and was a soloist in the college's Gospel Choir.
Debbie was among the elite few vocalists to be accepted as a Masters student in the Jazz/Commercial Performance program at Manhattan School of Music. There she learned jazz piano and bigband arranging under the guidence of Dave Lalama, studied jazz voice with Ann Marie Moss and then contemporary voice with Norma Garbo. Debbie wrote and sang many an original piece performed by her class ensemble led by Saturday Night Live's Steve Turré, and great jazz bassist Harvie Swartz. Debbie received training in electronic music from Richard Sussman. She was nominated unanimously by her fellow Jazz Choir members to conduct under the supervision of Steve Schwartz.
Debbie Degenhardt has sung with bands including but not limited to: Teacher's Pet (Fredonia, NY); Drive She Said (Dunkirk, NY); Eevolution (Huntington, NY); Mike Gordon Quintet (New York, NY); Sandi Blair (Brooklyn, NY); Starlite (Bellmore, NY); Gold Leaf Entertainment (Queens, NY); Starlite Broadway Cabaret Dinner Theater (Islip, NY); The Legend of Patsy Cline (Hauppauge, NY); Rockwell (Bellmore, NY); Scarecrow (Bellmore, NY); Crystal Heart Productions (Bethpage, NY) and New York's Most Dangerous Big Band (Babylon, NY).
Debbie gives back to her supportive fan base by accepting private students. Her efforts have been rewarded when her students have been hired by Disney, landed leads their freshman year of college, graced the stage in lead roles at the Westchester Broadway Dinner Theater and Yorktown Stage. A scintillating gem in Degenhardt’s student successes is that of Mary Ann West of The Legend of Patsy Cline. Not only did Debbie vocally coach Ms. West, she was invited to join the ensemble. This is the group which backs West on stage as well as on her numerous recordings.
One final credit to Debbie’s relationship with Ms. West was the collaboration of an original ballad called "A Family is Forever," which is featured on West’s CD "Been There, Done That." Debbie Degenhardt is now a composer lyricist for hire, writing original songs for special occasions and catered affairs including weddings, anniversaries, and other rites of passage. She also creates musical ‘roasts,’ which are perfect for honoring retirees or congratulating a colleague at a corporate affair. Degenhardt’s bands include top-notch musicians who’ve appeared on TV, recorded with major artists, performed at venues such as Radio City Music Hall, Nassau Coliseum and The Waldorf Astoria.
